Dicentra: Care & Growing Tips

Dicentra is a genus of herbaceous flowering plants in the Fumariaceae family, commonly known as bleeding hearts. These plants are prized for their unique, heart-shaped flowers.

Growing Conditions

  • Light: Partial to full shade; prefers dappled sunlight.
  • Soil: Rich, well-draining, and moist soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH.
  • Watering: Regular watering, especially in dry periods, but avoid waterlogged soil.
  • Hardiness: Generally hardy in USDA Zones 3-9, depending on the species.

Care & Maintenance

  • Dormancy: Many species go dormant in summer, especially in hot climates. Reduce watering when foliage starts to die back.
  • Fertilizing: A layer of compost or a balanced fertilizer in spring helps promote growth.
  • Pruning: Remove dead or yellowing foliage to keep plants tidy.
